Sometimes staying connected matters more than anything else.
A standard extension cable is perfectly adequate for many situations. But if you're moving around on stage, working with wireless bodypacks or simply want the confidence that your headphones or in-ear monitors won't disconnect at the wrong moment, this locking headphone extension cable provides a secure mechanical connection without sacrificing flexibility.
Why we build it this way
There are plenty of ways to build an extension cable. We settled on this combination because it offers the flexibility musicians expect while adding something many standard extensions can't: a secure locking connection.
At the equipment end we've chosen the REAN NYS231BG. It's compact enough to sit comfortably in wireless bodypacks, headphone amplifiers and portable devices, while its metal construction and gold-plated contacts make it a connector we trust for regular use.
For the cable itself we use Van Damme Tour Grade Classic XKE. Although originally developed for professional microphone systems, we've always liked it for headphone and IEM extensions because it's flexible, coils neatly and remains comfortable during long performances. Its low handling noise and excellent shielding make it particularly well suited to portable audio applications where the cable is constantly moving.
At the extension end we've fitted a genuine Neutrik NJ3FC6-BAG locking inline socket. Compatible plugs lock automatically when inserted and are released by pressing the red latch. It's a simple feature, but one that helps prevent accidental disconnection when movement or cable pull could otherwise interrupt your monitoring.
It isn't simply an extension cable with a locking connector added on. It's the combination we'd normally recommend if somebody told us they'd had enough of accidentally unplugging their headphones or IEMs.
Is this the right cable?
If your extension cable spends most of its time plugged in behind a desk or in a home studio, you probably don't need a locking connector. Our standard REAN to Switchcraft extension cable will do the job perfectly well.
If you're performing on stage, using wireless in-ear monitoring, working in broadcast or simply want extra security against accidental disconnection, this is exactly the version we'd recommend.
The locking socket isn't about better sound quality. It's about making sure the connection is still there when you need it most.
Performance & Build Quality
Van Damme Tour Grade Classic XKE combines low capacitance, a close-lapped spiral OFC screen and exceptional flexibility to produce a cable that's comfortable to wear, easy to coil and resistant to handling noise. Whether it's used for rehearsals, touring or studio work, it remains one of our favourite cables for headphone and IEM extensions.
The compact REAN mini jack provides a dependable connection at the source end, while the Neutrik locking socket adds an extra level of mechanical security where accidental disconnection is most likely to occur. Every cable is hand assembled, inspected and electrically tested in our Nottingham workshop before dispatch.
