As time has gone by Synths have become increasingly complex and more compact, yet the Midi protocol remains the same. To save space for more fun stuff modern devices are now using 3.5mm mini jack sockets to send Midi commands. This range of cables interfaces the modern 3.5mm socket with the old style 5 Pin Din allowing seamless integration with controllers, sound cards and other devices that you know and love

Standards have now been drawn up by the midi association, but devices made prior to this may be wired differently.
